What is Functional Medicine
Functional Medicine (FM) is a rapidly growing discipline that seeks to determine and address the root causes of illness and disease, instead of focusing on and managing only the symptoms. The discipline typically focuses on healing chronic disease states, including chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, infertility, diabetes, heart disease, neurodegenerative diseases, and auto-immune conditions. FM also seeks to optimize health and vitality in individuals without a current chronic disease state.
FM aims not only to get patients healthy (symptom free), but to move them beyond that to a state of vitality and overall well-being. Where traditional Western medicine has evolved to work with the individual organs or organ systems in isolation, FM considers how these various organs and systems interact in illness and in health.
